APPLY FOR YOUR FIRST UK DRIVER’S LICENCE
Get your first provisional driving licence for a moped, motorbike and car from DVLA online. To apply you must:

be at least 15 years and 9 months old
be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away
This service is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).

If you already have a provisional licence, you do not need to apply again to drive a car.

BEFORE YOU START
It costs £34 to apply online. You can pay by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card.

You’ll need to provide:

an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport
addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
your National Insurance number if you know it
You’ll get a confirmation email from DVLA after you’ve applied. You might be asked to take part in research by email, but you can opt-out.

Your UK driver’s licence should arrive within one week if you apply online. It may take longer if DVLA needs to make additional checks.

WHEN YOU CAN DRIVE WITH A UK DRIVER’S LICENCE
Different rules are depending on your age and the type of vehicle. Check what vehicles you can drive and when before you start to learn.

VIEW OR SHARE YOUR UK DRIVING LICENCE INFORMATION
You can use this service to:

view your driving record, for example, vehicles you can drive
check your penalty points or disqualifications
create a licence ‘check code’ to share your driving record with someone, for example, a car hire company
The check code will be valid for 21 days.

You’ll need:

your UK driving licence number
your National Insurance number
the postcode on your driving licence
TELL DVLA YOU’VE CHANGED ADDRESS: STEP BY STEP
You must update your driving licence, vehicle log book (V5C), Direct Debit for vehicle tax and other details when you move home. You do not need to tell us if you move temporarily (for example you’re living away at university) if we can still contact you at your permanent address.

You can still drive while you wait for your new documents to be sent to you.

You should contact the police if your driving licence is stolen.

To replace your licence you’ll need to:

be a resident of Great Britain (there’s a different service in Northern Ireland)
not be disqualified from driving for any reason
pay £20 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card
provide addresses where you’ve lived for the last 3 years
Provide your driving licence number, National Insurance number and passport number if you know them.

YOUR PHOTO
DVLA will use your passport photo for your new licence if all the following are true:

your driving licence is due to expire within 2 years
you have a valid UK passport – you’ll need to provide your passport number
you permit for DVLA to use your photo
DVLA will tell you if a suitable electronic photo is not available. They’ll send you a form so you can give them a new photo.

You can make sure the photo on your licence is updated by using the photo driving licence renewal service.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND YOUR OLD LICENCE LATER
You must return your old licence to DVLA explaining what’s happened if you find it after applying for or receiving a replacement.

You cannot apply online if your name or title has changed.

You must renew a photocard licence every 10 years – you’ll receive a reminder before your current licence ends.

WHAT YOU NEED
To renew online, you need:

a valid UK passport
to be a resident of Great Britain – there’s a different service in Northern Ireland
to pay £14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short-period licence)
addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
your current driving licence (if you do not have your licence you must say why in your application)
your National Insurance number (if you know it)
to not be disqualified from driving
HOW LONG IT TAKES
It may take longer than 3 weeks for you to get your licence because of coronavirus (COVID-19).

You must send your old photocard licence to DVLA when you get your new licence. You’ll be told the address to use when you finish the application.

Your new licence will be valid from the date your application is approved, not from the expiry date of your current licence.

PERSONAL DATA
DVLA will send you a confirmation email once you’ve applied. You might be asked to take part in research by email, but you can opt-out.
